The topic is obvious, write down what type of characters have you tried out, what kinds are you playing with, and what else do you want to try out.

    I have played with:
    - a good human with knowledge of Healing Salve and Fatigue restorer, some magic, and ungodly high ST and CH (finished)
    - an half-ogre with pure dodge-meele skills (unfinished, saved game lost)
    - an evil human with Child of a Hero (or what the heck) background, mainly magickal (Conveyance, Force full, some White Necro, Black Necro if I remember correctly) (unfinished, but will be continued)
    - a cheater human with all the magic spells available (just for experimenting - I am not afraid of spoilers)

    I am playing with:
    - a very evil halfling thief, on hard level (bah...)

    I will try out:
    - a very evil dwarf
    - a true neutral character
    - a mindless butcher (killing everything that moves!)
    - a character with totally useless skills (yeah. it will be fun trying to hit something with 0% or 1% chance)
    - a character who does not improve
    etc....

I've played through a couple of times and I always end up with the same character.

Neutral good diplomat (human or gnome)
    Max charisma, beauty and intelligence
Terrible constitution and strength (tendency to faint)
No combat skills at all (run away and let legion of followers do the damage)
Learn enough tech to make charged rings and then use a lot of manuals for found schematics
    Maintain an alignment of 100
    Miracle operation
The lack of combat skills means I can complete every quest and still only be level 30 at the end of the game.

Weird coincidence but I was planning on posting a character question like this today.

    I tend to play:

Good Halfling gunslinger/grenadier with maxed Electrical (Tesla gun plus Stun grenades)

Good Half-ogre blacksmith (making armor and Pyro axes for himself and the rest of the party; also the only way for a tech Half-Ogre to get a decent armor suit)

Neutral dwarf archer/demolition man with a Pyro bow and enough Dynamite to blow up the whole of Tarant.

    Evil Elven Sorcerer (Conveyance+Temporal+Harm+Fireflash+ 100MA)

    Evil Gnome Thrower/Necromancer/Diplomat

    Tried couple of things...

Evil Elven Mage (Dark Necromancy, Temporal, Conveyance) background - Dark Elf - killed everything

Good Human "Diplomat" - some strenght, some dex, but mainly persuasion and some magick (basic healing) raised by monks

Neutral Dwarf Technologist (Armorer, Gunsmithy) made bronwicks gun and other thingies... used all kinds of guns and rifles

Good Elf Fighter (max strenght max dx, no magic no tech) background techofobic

Neutral Half-Ogre Fighter (max strenght, max dx)
-used only for a good laugh (dialogues)

finished in many ways: once joined kergan, once convinced him that he was wrong(and killed him) ond three times plain killed him...

my favorite character (or at least my most powerful) was an elven bowman necromancer. i could keep enemies at a distance which definitley came in handy cos i had no health. i beleive i used the sold your soul background. the character i'm playing right now is a half-orc gunsmith/slinger with the bandit background. and a character i've been wanting to play is a human paladin-type, son of a hero background and all combat/white necromancy skills.

As a joke, the recipe for Lemming:

    Lemming

Take one Squall glass, ice the edge with jelly or sugar crystals. Add 30ml of Absinthe and 30 ml of Tequila. Top up with a dash of any and every spirit and liquer you can fit in the glass. Stick a cherry on top. Say farewell to your family and friends - you won't be seeing them for a while. Drink. Call ambulance.

The characters I find myself playing mostoften are technological. I've only ever played as elves, dwarves, humans, and half ogres.
My first character was a straight up technologist, maximum good alignment. I had the level 127 patch, so he ended up with a doctorate in every science, I finished the game with him. My second character was a dwarf, I made him evil, kept the technologist theme, but only made him get to level 50, and played on hard mode. My third was a female elf, whom I made a super mage via the level 127 patch. She was good, but I stole a lot with her. A lot. Mastered 5 schools of magic, expert in bow and melee. My current character is a half ogre technologist. I made a custom background for him so that I would be able to learn past the first five schematics in the disciplines. But, I also made it so he couldn't carry as much, and I also lowered his health to make it more balanced. Plus, whenever I got into town I killed someone with him, just to keep me on my toes.

I've played the lot of things to play in Arcanum, but the very first (and therefore my favourite) is the neutral, dumb, half ogre with max T, DX, CN. Add the max dodge, melee and backstab skill, and you've got my evil little monster.

I'm wondering how much fun it could be to play with the "life in the Pits" background, you know, where you start with minus six intelligence? Yeah, then make your race half ogre, you should have almost no brainpower. Then, make him a mage, but make him a master of throwing and firearms. Anyone have some other suggestions?

I've played many different characters, and recently I've had the itch to play again but I just can't decide what kind of character to make...

Some of my favorite characters made in the past:

A half-orc hitman. He worked for a crime syndicate in Caladon and was aboard the IFS Zephyr to kill someone. He hated the life of crime and killing though and so he used his survival of the crash as an opportunity to live for himself for a change. It wasn't so easy though... he was a hopeless alcoholic and while drunk off his rocker he wound up accepting some other drunkard's request to rob the Shrouded Hills bank. Aside from getting drunk and then stumbling about the city in a stupor... He wasnt' such a bad guy. However as a half-orc he was never treated very well and the various criminal organizations were the only places he could make enough money to keep drinking. He hates being a low-life, he hates drinking, but when he's drunk he forgets about all of that and his depression goes away. Sadly he decided to take a risk and explore the Tarantian sewers in hope of scoring some expensive loot... but he was bitten on the ankle by a venemous sewer rat and he succombed to the poison long before he could make it back out. He was fun and I had high aspirations for him... but oh well. A tragic and un-dignified end for a tragic and un-dignified life.

(note: he died that way because I got poisoned by a rat and quick-saved without realizing it)

I've made other characters too but none of have stuck with me like he did. He was fun to play.

First character I played and finished the game with was a half ogre with Master Dodge and Melee and maxed strength and agility (or whatever the hell it's called). It was fun being able to actually finish the game without any difficulties, but it was a boring character.

Arcanum disappeared in the cupboard for about two years after that.

I gave the game a second try, this time with a half elf magician, still with Master Dodge and Melee, though, because it seemed like a nice back up. Easy to get to the finish with teh magic as well.

After that I made the character that I love the most and still use when I play: a gunslinging MacGyver, so to speak. You know: a guy who knows how to make technological what-shall-I-call-its and who can use handguns and guns and stuff. With deecent lockpick skills as well, so that he can get his hands on all sorts of sweet things. They're harder to play at the start of the game, but they pwn magicians and melee fighters from midgame till the end.
