im a melee character with 19 dex and have the helm of vision or whatever its called. my melee and dodge skills are level 4 and up til now, i rarely ever missed but all of a sudden i cant hit anything. when wearing chainmail my character starts to attack but just stops halfway. if i switch to leather armor i can at least attack but my average chance to hit has gone from 119% to 77%. i dont know what happened. i have the latest patch installed and havent found anyone talking about similar problems.

is this a problem with my game or is there something i can do to fix this?

ps- sorry for such a newbie question but obviously i wont be able to keep playing a fighter if the game wont let me fight

What equipment are you wearing, and how strong is your character? Sure you haven't equipped any cursed items?

    My stats are as follows...
    Str: 12
    Con: 10
    Dex: 19
    Be: 11
    In:12
    Wis:10
    Pe: 10
    Cha:11

    I'm wearing:
    Charged ring
    Dwarven Gauntlets
    Chainmail
    Featherweight Axe
    Helmet of Vision

if i take off the armor i can hit things but it says my vision is obstructed and my chance to hit goes way down. removing my helmet doesnt change anything

This may be a rather stupid presumption, but you don't happen to have broken arms or eye injury, do you? To be honest, I'm not even sure if the latter is possible in Arcanum, but better check everything.

Also, loading an older save and checking out if you can attack using the same equipment would be a good idea, because if you could, we'll be sure that the problem isn't about the game files getting corrupt or something like that and if you couldn't, it would mean that the save is alright while there's something wrong with the game, which would actually be a good thing since in that situation reinstalling would probably solve the problem.

i assume nothings broken. i mean, on the character screen theres nothing in red but i dont know where it says if i have a broken arm or sprained ankle or hurt feelings or anything like that.

i tried reloading a save from right before i got the chainmail (which is when all these problems seemed to start) and i could hit things just fine. is there a strength requirement for chainmail? i guess that would make sense, but i never saw any indication of that, like when you try to equip a weapon thats too heavy

You can find your list of injuries in your character log. You'll see lots of tabs for blessings, reputations, quests and things like that, one of the tabs is for injuries.

It's in your Log Book, in the Kills & Injuries section. Especially the "hurt feelings" part.

There isn't. There's no need for it. The game already acts realistically and discourages low-strength players with low load capacity from wearing chainmail or - good heavens - platemail by significantly slowing them down.

i tried equipping plate mail armor and can hit things just fine, again. i dont understand it but maybe its just some glitch with the chainmail or something

And what about the average chance to hit dropping from 119% to 77%? Happens in a platemail as well?

If you'd be in the mood for testing, you could check how the situation looks in cases of other types of chainmails, preferably ones which use the very same set of sprites.

You could also upload you savegame and post the link to it here. Maybe it will be easier to identify your problem if we'll simply run your game. By the way, you said you have the latest patch, but did you mean the 1.0.7.4 official patch of the latest Unofficial Arcanum Patch?

my chance to hit still drops but maybe thats because im in a dark area. should the helm of visibility make it as easy for me to see as a lantern would, or does the helm just make me less blind in dark places.

also, i put on a set of platemail and could attack as normal, then i tried equipping some oiled chainmail and had the same problem where it wouldnt let me attack

Come to think of it, I'm not really sure how the Helmet of Vision works. I always simply treated it as an ingredient for the Goggled Helmet.

Still, that shouldn't really matter in your case, since - as you previously mentioned - you already have 4/5 in melee and I'm guessing you received expert training, which means lighting penalties no longer affect your character when it comes to using melee weapons in combat.

The Helmet of Vision just lacks the usual -1 penalty to perception for wearing a helmet; nothing special otherwise.

actually i havent been seeking out trainers so i think i might still be apprentice level (i was never actually sure what kind of benefits expert and master, etc status had). im guessing the darkness is the only reason for the shitty accuracy and as for the chainmail, i can only assume theres some issue with the chainmail skin in my game or something

Do your companions (if any) suffer from the same issues? That is, does their chance to hit go down as well if they are equipped the same way or is it just an issue that affects your main character?

the only character i currently have chainmail on is virgil and it doesnt seem to cause any problems for him

also, after equipping a light in my off hand there is not issue with accuracy anymore (though the chainmail problem is still there)

If he has the same equipment as you previously had (in other words, uses the same sprites), I really have no idea what's wrong with your game.

You should really consider taking expert melee training so that you will have no more problems with accuracy penalties coming from bad lighting.
