Newb question

I've just started the game and I looked through the FAQ, but maybe my perception is too low, in any case:
Could someone kindly explain how many npc followers I'm allowed to have, and on what stat that is based on? I am clueless.

 

It's based on charisma.You can get +1 follower for every 4 points of charisma.

i'm sure you don't have to "prostrate" yourself(j/k)....what character are you using???

Yes, "prostate" was a little jest. I'm using the "lame" half-orc with a background of raised in a circus, melee, dodge, throwing, lockpick, and explosives (I am about level 15 and can make explosive grenades). I figure I'll run throught the game with a simple fighter the first time through. I get poor initial reactions from people, but I kick a lot of ass.
