Because I want to contribute to the amount of useless ASCII on the General Discussion...

What was the first comp game that you really liked? The game you would do a back in my day thing with.

Commander Keen I, IV, V. Still play IV and V. Those games effected gaming madly.

Dopefish is described in the cast of characters for Secret of the Oracle as the second dumbest creature inthe universe. His thought patterns go, "swim swim hungry, swim swim hungry." Dopefish "will eat anything alive and moving near them, though they prefer heroes." (What's the most dumbest creature in the universe? Why, of course, the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal. It's so stupid that it thinks if you can't see it, it can't see you. One way to avoid the BugBlatter Beast is to throw a towel over your head.)

I also took a liking to sim tower, really the only sim game I enjoyed for more than a month.

The lemmings games are classic too :)

    Lemmings

Yes, Lemmings were good, there were actually a bunch of games with the same idea at the same time, lemmings is the only one that did very well.

Well, I played games when I was four, and I loved games then. The first game I loved I do not really remember.

Console game: It was Either Zelda II(NES), Mario(NES), or Legacy of the Wizard(NES). Poassably Ninja Gaiden II(NES). I can't remember that far back.

PC: I can't really remember that far back either. Either Tanks wars or Civilization 1.

Well, it wasn't the first game I liked, but it was the first RPG I liked. I forget exactly which one I played first, since I bought them in a bundle, so I will just list them all.

    Champions of Krynn
    Death Knights of Krynn
    Dark Queen of Krynn

When did your game come out?
I know that K4 came out in 1991, but not sure about the others

I see you like DragonLance. I never have played a Dragonlance game or anything, but I've read the books. I wish they would make a MMORPG of Dragonlance.

Actually, I don't know when the games were originally released, but the bundle was put together in '94.

And it wasn't really that I liked Dragonlance persay, just D&D. Also still got Pool of Radiance (the original, baby), Curse of the Azure Bonds, and Secret of the Silver Blades. Actually, even though I can't even play at least half of em anymore, I have about 14 D&D RPGs. (Though admitedly, 3 of em I didn't really work right to begin with, plus I didn't really like the interface much, so I never really played em. But at the time I bought them. those 3 came with 3 others I've enjoyed, so it wasn't a total loss)

The first games I ever played were on Commodore 64. The first game was an adventure game. It had basic graphics, and they only moved after you executed a command of some sort. I couldn't beat the game :). The other one was some sort of Olympics game, which I also sucked at :). First proper game was Civilisation 1...now, THAT was a game. Console, Mario Brothers/Duck Hunt was the first I had. Couldn't beat them either :D.

The very first is hard to pinpoint, but one of the first was certainly a game called "Dungeon Master" (not the one you're thinking) on the ZX Spectrum. It was basically a text-based dungeon hack, where you found weapons and potions, fought a surprisingly large variety of monsters, and improved your character. I think it was probably out around 1983.

One of the revolutionary (for its time) things about the game was that you could create your own maps for other people to play. The textual nature of it, and the fact that rooms were pretty much only described in terms of exits, treasure and monsters also allowed you to play little games with players' heads (like after going one space East, going back West doesn't take you to the room you came from).

The earliest game that I still actually play was Doomdark's Revenge, also on the Spectrum. It was a strategy game, released in 1984 as a sequel to Lords of Midnight, and the creators very kindly released the original code, so that a PC port could be created that runs native without an emulator or anything. If anyone out there wants to play it, I can send you the exe.

Hmm... old games I remember well...

Zork - mid 80s? Anyone remember that first text adventure game?

DnD - an ASCII mapped dungeon adventure. Walls were I's and L's and that sort of thing. Monsters were W's, D's, G's, etc. The character (Fighter, Cleric, Mage, or Thief) was an X. You moved using arrow keys, one space at a time. 20 level dungeon with an "Orb" you had to find on the 20th level. This was strangely addictive...

The early Ultima games. (I had U-I through U-V)

I was quite fond of a game called "StarFlight" on my old Compaq 286 in the late 80s. I actually recently found a free download of this game online, and played it for awhile. The graphics were depressing, considering I thought they were really hot back then, but the game was still fun :)

Funny thing but you are talkig such crap. Zork is not the fisrt or even the tenth. God dammit my net child but that is so very not true. there was about 100 text adventure games by about 1982 or so.

I forgive you but i know some who would kill you then feed you to therer cats and then poison their cats and blah blah....

Fuck the quote thing not working

My earliest game was quite similar to your DnD, Luchaire. It was also an ASCII-type game called "Rogue." It was created in 1981, I think. I can remember playing it ever since I was 4. I still play it today, and it's still as addictive as ever.

I have a feeling your DnD is one of the "roguelikes" modeled after Rogue. I say the original is still by far the best. If any of you want to learn more about it, or download it to play, here's a good site that has info and the game. http://home.wanadoo.nl/loche/rogue/index.html

It's a very simple ASCII game, with the hero being a smiley face, the monster's being W's, C's, V's, etc., various potions, rings, scrolls and stuff to get, and the main quest item being the Amulet of Yendor. Incredibly fun game. And hard to beat, too. :)

    It's probably very similar then.

When I was about 8 or 9, I started playing it (1980 or so) - it was actually written (I believe) by a fellow who worked for "Digital Electronics Corp" with my father - the best thing about having a dear ol' dad who worked there in middle mgmt was that we got all the coolest computers before the public ever did... and had all these weird games no one else did. I guess some of the programmers got bored alot :p

    Edit:
I found some info on DnD - apparently it predates Rogue by quite a bit, originating sometime around 1972. The version I played was taken over by DEC employees (as I suspected) around 1979, and shortly after that is when copies were available for my playing pleasure :) (See here for history)

Now working on finding a functional download of it. heh.

I used to play Commander Keen, too! One of the first games I ever played... Played it when I was 3-4. Played it until I was around 8 and we got a better computer.

First game was on a Commodore 64 computer. I forget the title, but you were a round robot that traveled through a flat 2-d spaceship, going through portals (doors). There were other robots out there that you had to kill. They were identified by numbers. For instance, when you started, you began as a robot numbered 222. A robot with the number 999 was a bad-ass mother fucker. He shot a wicked bolt of lightning. My favorite was the number 711 robot. He basically dispersed electricity, and all who were in the screen perished. Somehow, you were able to morph into these higher numbers. Maybe it was once you killed them. Other numbers were 666 and 444. Basically, the higher the number the more bad ass the weapon. You traveled around, Pac-Man style, sorta....With more freedom of movement. Anyone played this and can tell me what it's called?
