You don't have to read it, just keep it in your inventory. The very presence of the manual in your inventory adds to your smithy skill. Go to your character's "profile", click on smithy and see the blue number- that's your level in this discipline. The more manuals you carry, the higher your level. Of course, you don't have to drag them around with you throughout all the game, just stash them somewhere.

it depends on whether or not you need put points into tech disciplines to be able to make items necessary to create a pyrotechnic axe, and i think you do. if that is the case then no, but if the components are available in the world, and you have the schematic, then the answer is yes.

Yes, you should be able to. Just get the necessery parts and schematics.

Grizzled War Veteran in Black Root will train you if you ask him about the war with Tarant and have the patience to listen till the end. Also, there should be someone on the Isle of Despair who can train you.

For the Pyro Axe in particular, no. You cannot find a fire obstruction anywhere in Arcanum, you can only make them.

But if you had the Blade Launcher schematic for instance. You can find an Elephant Gun, I think that some poacher in some god forsaken place that I don't feel like remembering right now, and is probably a spoiler anyway, has one. And you can get a Fine Steel Dagger at any blacksmith, so if you had the manuals and items, sure you could make it.

Hmm in my game, it only takes fuel to build it...

You wouldn't happen to be unpatched would you? I vaguely rcollect them making the Pyro Axe require Fire Obstructions in the patch, because it was far too easy getting the best melee weapon in the game.

Yep, unpatched and proud of it. Pyro axe for cheap, Looking Glass Rifle with damage 40-40- what else would you possibly need? ;)

    Lucky bastard!

No I think the game is too easy anyway, and too buggy without patches. I'm currently formulating a patch to add a bunch of new things to the game, what is the damage for the looking rifle now, I forget. I also forget if pyro axe needs kerosene or fire obstruction now. Kerosene you can get, so if that's what it needs, your set.

Upgrade your video card. A 32 meg video card cures most lag problems, a 64, all of them.

You almost got it right there. Her name is Lianna Del Par. She's also involved in the quest Maximillian gives you.

Might as well post here since this thread has miscellaneous questions anyway:

How can I get Vollinger to use his schematics on hunting rifle and revolver chamber if he always wants to wield that rifle? Do I need to get two rifles just so that he has one in his inventory also or can I make him not wield it for a while?

Edit: umm, sorry about that. Little research and I found out about "auto equip"-option.

To make items for you, followers need to have components in their inventories. So in your case, you would need to have him wielding something besides the component you need.
