Is Educator background bugged?

Is Educator background not working, or did I just not figure out how to activate it?
I'm playing a gunslinger dwarf with educator background. One of my followers in Vollinger, who I would like to teach for an apprentice in Firearms- but it doesn't happen automatically when he joins me. Is there a way to teach him, or does it mean that the background is simply bugged?

 

I am a Firearms expert. Therefore, Vollinger is supposed to be an apprentice- but he is not. That's the problem.

 

Try getting trained in Firearms again. I believe your followers skills will be upgraded automatically. I don't remeber if you have to get Expert again or any Apprentice will suffice.

 

I think they upgrade when you train in any skill again.

 

I believe they also will train when you level up.

 

You mean Vollinger will train to Expert if I gain one more level while he is in the party? Because he already DOES have three points in Firearms, which is enough for an Expert, and he isn't even an apprentice

 

No, I meant he will become an Apprentice when you level up. He cannot become Expert untill you make Master. (Not that the Expert firearms bonus does followers much good.)

 

I probably didn't explain the situation well. I am an Educator and a Firearms expert. Vollinger joined me, but he still isn't an Apprentice. How do I teach him? What does "level up" mean here? Gaining experience levels or getting master training?

 

Level up = gaining an experience level. Also, I have been told that if you ask about any training fron an NPC, untrained followers will gain training at that point.

Solaris, your english is so fluent, it takes some minor language thing like this to make me remember that it is not your native tounge. Do you speak it as well as you write it?

 

I'm afraid not. I haven't had any practice in spoken English for at least 8 years. I also have a horrible Russian +Hebrew accent.

 

a russian hebrew accent on the english language... that would be interesting... but yea... I'm having the same problem with the Educator... I think it is bugged because I'm a master in firearms, ranged, and throwing, and none of my followers (several of whom could be an expert in the above) are able to become an expert... or even an apprentice...

 

Have you leveled up and the condition has not corrected itself?

 

I've had Virgil in my party since 54, and Magnus longer, and neither have gained the skills they should have... they're still lacking an apprentice ship or expertise... and I've had them leave the party then rejoin.... still nothing...

 

Leaving & rejoining does not work, otherwise they would get trained when they joined up the first time.

The level cap remover mod may be messing up the educator background. If you remove the mod and/or get the patch, it should work fine.

 

Two glaring problems. One, as Demosthenes suggested, the level cap cheat messes with a whole bunch of things in the game. I wouldn't be surprised if this was one of them. If you mess with any of the game files, especially the *.exe (which controls the Educator background, I believe), you can't really complain when things don't work.

Two, I hope to god the above quotes aren't related, because the most you can expect out of that situation is a firearms apprenticeship from Magnus. Unless you've hacked your followers as well. Are you using Chris's mod?

I have never had any kind of problem with the Educator background in the normal, patched, unmodded, English version of Arcanum.

 

I don't have the level cap mod. I do have the store one, but I don't see how that would effect it...

In any case, I'm going to wager you're doing something wrong. ("As usual your analysis is short and to the point, Ken!" "Thank you, Vic!") Either you're not qualified, or your followers aren't, or you're running some mod, or you didn't uninstall the level cap cheat properly, or you just need to level up first.
