When getting the jewel of hebes, what negative consequences are there if I decide to kill the priest? I don't care about alignment shift and stuff like that, but will it block off any quests later or piss off all people of the panarii religion or something?
I really want the jewel and have NO prowling and NO lockpicking skill so I'm pretty sure killing him is the only way to get it.

    Any help would be appreciated.

It will only reduce your alignment and probably piss off people in Tarant. I never risked doing that yet. BUT: there is a way of getting the Jewel without killing the priest: destroy the chest from a safe distance, where the priest won't notice you. You can do it:
    1)With dynamite or plastique
    2)With a Looking Glass rifle
3)With fireflash or other direct damage spell other than Harm
After the chest is destroyed, try to pick the Jewel up before the priest does it

Try a Mystical Chakram, it does more damage. Another option would be to drop a cursed item such as the Baneful Gauntlets next to the priest and let him die. Then get the jewel, get the gauntlets back, and you can even ressurrect the guy and he'll like you more.

I've found that after being killed by the baneful gauntlets and resurrected, the guy comes back poisoned.

They do come back poisoned, but it's only a small amount so if you advance time as soon as you ressurrect them, they'll be fine.

Do you have some sort of double post button right next to your regular post button, or what??

Macs are actually the best computers out there. people always whine about how you cant use pc software with them, but thats not true. you can download PC emulators for your mac that will let you run non-mac software and still benefit from the better performance and stability provided by your macintosh.

did i mention macs are faster too? a 1.5hz mac will run faster than a 2.5 ghz PC.

The only problem you will have if you kill the priest is he is a Force Mage, & has Fire all the way. Off him quick or stare a Fire Elemental in the face.

Any ranged weapon will work eventualy. If you have no ranged weapon skill, use any weapon that has a + TH. Doc's Revolver will work, 60 - 80 bullets, cheap for that jem. The priest must be stone deaf as I have shot that trunk to splinters with a Mechanized Gun & he never flinched.

I discovered that placing plastique next to the priest works as well... :) though I wasn't actually doing the quest... I just saw the jewel in the chest (I love being a tech-mage!!) blew up the priest, stole the jewel, and, well... now have a jewel. so who do you get the quest from? I hope it isn't Mr. Black... that guy is 6ft under and quite pissed.

Yes, the quest for the JoH is a thieve's underground quest, but it is far too valuble to trade in for the few hundred gold & EX points you get. Just wear it in town. There is better jewelery for combat.

Not quite right. You can still get the quests, you just can't turn the stuff in for the rewards.

If my memory serves correctly, one CAN still complete the thieves' guild quests if one decides to keep the Jewel. The thieves' informants will give your character up to three jobs for the guild at one time. If you decide to keep the Jewel then you will only be able to take on two new jobs at a time but you will still be able to complete the other quests as long as you don't decide to keep more than three of the thieves' guild's marks.

I seem to remember being able to have 4 jobs at a time, not just 3.
