I just have a question, certain items, in the description box, have a burning pentagram symbol attached to them. What is this supposed to represent? That they are unique items? Cursed items? Evil items? Something else?

Those would be hexed items, and they are cursed yes. Generally they have some negative effect tied to them.

It can work both ways though. There are ways around some of the effects of those items. Like any item that would cast a spell, it could hit your enemy or could hit you. You can prevent it from hitting you if you have the Dweomer shield spell on you.

You can always take the item off if you don't like it. Just be wary of the items with orange names

That seems to make sense, but what about items like Staff of Hipocrisy, which doesn't have great damage, but it randomly bestows shield of protection, without any other listed side effects, or Nature's Helm (I think that's what it's called...) which I don't have anymore due to a save game corruption. Those don't seem to have any downsides, yet why are they considered cursed?

I could be mistaken but I believe the helm casts entangle on a critical. Sometimes you hit the enemy with the entangle, sometimes YOU are the recipient of the entangle.

Correct me if I am wrong.

I don't know anything about the staff btw.

THe magick tied to them is RANDOMLY cast, that doens't mena Randomly cast on you, it means anybody on the screen can get it cast on them. That means you enemies could get the protection sheild, OR you could.
