    Strong Melee/Minor Magick.

That's the character type I've had the easiest time playing.

There are three particularly effective beginning charachter types, but branching off is good.

    1) Mage. Harm is a useful first-level spell, and go for a point of melee so you dont spend a long time waiting for Fatigue to replenish

    2) Hulk. Just lots of high melee.

    3) Technologist. Again, a point of melee is advised- or throwing (buy the boomerang then) if you want to be an Explosives specialist. SPend some points on SMithy (two ranks) because you can get a super effective Balanced Sword as soon as you find Shrouded Hills with the two creation abilities.

mage? MAGE!? youre out of yer minds! I have a 100% with 70% magical resistance and a horde a automatons, with mastery in firearms, soon a telsa gun. in realtime you mages would be dead before you hit the ground. in turn based cast disentigrate or some other cantrip(hoping it will work) then escape and (I hope) teleport yourself into a tree

In realtime, a mage can entangle you, then summon two ogre guards(or worse) in just five clicks.

If you are entangled is there not still the army of automatons and can't you fire while entangled? I prefer realtime. More fast paced.

Real time basically sucks for anyone not proficient in melee.

no I disagree since bullets when fired reach the guy instantly but other thrown weapons can be dodged "manualy" and that's why I stopped after a while to use bronwicks gun
you could dodge these geen puffs. Also even if you entangle me I could still shoot...
Maybe with a granade launcher? Boom.

I personally went for a more middle ground with my character. I chose to make a thief-type character. My only tech is lockpicking, and I only have a couple utility spells. This may not be the most powerful character, but it is AMAZINGLY fun; and provides the right kind of challenge for me.

Most games don't do well with balancing the middle ground, self-interested type of character. Arcanum does this extremely well... Blow up the steam-engine and then sell the constable the parts to fix it at a steep price. Wonderful! No botched quests, and zero-sum karma.

As a thief, at first combat is slightly difficult. The hardest fight I have seen so far was the bandit fight in the first village. Those stinking ogres punch for so much fatigue I was getting KO'd in a few seconds. For a thief, of course, there are other ways to get around that fight... but, I wanted the experience. My solution: use pickpocket to plant rusty railroad spikes on the bandits. They auto-equipped the spikes as their main weapon, and were easy to beat after that

Soon, though, backstab starts paying off, and fights become a lot easier. Plus, most quests don't require you to fight at all... there's usually a sneakier way.

Its a little dissappointing to miss out on some of the niftier spells and tech, but I can always play with that stuff with another character. I'm just really impressed with how they handled thieves.
