    Thanks, Wolfsbane.

DE: Your Latin phrase got me thinking. What would "The Fullmetal Alchemist" look like in Latin?

Unfortunately, the online dictionaries have been less than helpful in translating it. None of the five I tried had a word for "the" or "metal".

THE Fullmetal Alchemist, with "THE" in all caps.

I think Fullmetal Alchemist works, but I of course I like the technotitan too.

    You know - I like that! As-is.
To my ears it has a very scholarly, dignified sound.

There are no articles in Latin, hence no word for 'the'.

'Magnus Metallum Alchemistae' Great Metal Alchemist, not bad.

Edit, wouldn't it be 'Magna Metallum Alchemistae'?

That new picture is awesome! I'm for any of the names in this thread, though the latin needs some work.

This is based on my shitty knowledge of Latin, so beware:

I believe "magnus" is correct However, the phrase "magno opere" means "to a higher degree" or "greatly, very much." This might be a better term.

In Latin, the adjectives are usually placed AFTER the noun, so it would more like "Alchemistae Metallum Magnus," or "Alchemistae Metallum Magno Opere" if you prefer the second version. Conversely, if you consider a Metal Alchemist to be the full title (and consequencely, a complete noun), it would look like "Mettallum Alchemistae Magnus" or "Metallum Alchemistae Magno Opere."

    Personally, I prefer this preview:

    Alchemistae Metallum Magno Opere

    over this one

    Alchemistae Metallum Magnus

edit: Fixed word errors under the portraits

I believe 'alchemistae' is a feminine noun, hence I believe it's 'magna'. Also wouldn't 'Alchemistæ Metallum Magna' be the correct word positioning.

One thing to keep in mind though is the amount of space available for a title. The first one looks like it would be a bit too long, Philes.

Also - to my ears - Metallum Alchemistae Magnus doesn't roll as trippingly from the tongue as
    Magnus Metallum Alchemistae.

With the first you begin with a very strong-sounding word, then a softer one, and back to a strong sound. It may be the correct pronunciation but to me that breaks the continuity of the phrase.

On the second you begin with a strong sound, go to a stronger one, then end with the softer one that can be drawn out in a dramatic flourish.

Edit: You posted while I was still writing this, Xz. Oh well...

Yes, it would, I went to the trouble of explaining Latin grammar, and then failed to follow my own example.

I'm not sure of the gender of Alchemist, I guess I just assumed it was masculine.

It's your title, you can do as you wish Rroyo!

So what would the male version of this be?
That link D.E. posted isn't wanting to come up at the moment.

    Well, it works now.

Don't know what the hell to make of that though.

What it all boils down to is whether or not the noun changes gender or stays feminine regardless of who it is smacked on to.

    This got complicated.

    OooKaaayyy...

Since we've been informed that Alchimistae is the feminine form of the word, that leaves Alchimista.

    I can live with this.

If this title will fit in the space provided, great.
If not, go with Fullmetal Alchemist and call the job done.

I stand by my suggestion of THE in all caps. It distinguishes rroyo from all the other posers out there.
